Privacy Policy

Last updated April 22, 2026

This policy explains what Unanswer collects, why, and who it is shared with. Unanswer is operated by Reuben Thiessen. Reach us through our contact form.

What we collect

  • Waitlist email. If you enter your email on the "coming soon" screen, we store it alongside a timestamp so we can email you when the Service opens.
  • Your questions and revisions. The text of the questions you submit, the model's analysis, your revisions, and any reflections you write are stored so your session persists across reloads and devices.
  • Anonymous account identifier. Firebase assigns each visitor an anonymous user ID so your session can be tied to you without collecting personal information. If you sign in with Google, we also store your Google display name, email, and profile photo URL.
  • Technical logs. Our hosting and Cloud Function providers retain standard request logs (IP address, user agent, timestamps) for security and debugging.

Who we share data with

  • Anthropic, PBC. The questions you submit are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate the analysis that the Service returns. Anthropic's own privacy terms apply to that data. Unanswer does not use submitted questions to train models.
  • Google Firebase. Authentication, Firestore storage, Cloud Functions, and static hosting run on Google Firebase. Google's privacy terms apply to data stored there.
  • No advertisers, no resellers. We do not sell your data and we do not share it with advertising networks.

Research use of anonymized data

Unanswer is part of a research project on critical thinking and AI-mediated learning. Your questions, revisions, reflections, and Bloom's-level trajectories may be used in anonymized form for research purposes, including academic publications, grant deliverables, and public writing about the tool. Before any such use, data is stripped of identifying information — your name, email, Google account details, and IP address are removed, and free-text content is reviewed for incidental identifiers. Using the Service constitutes your agreement to this research use, as described in the Terms of Use.

Local storage

Unanswer uses your browser's local storage to hold a draft of the question you're writing and a lightweight cache of your session so the page stays fast. Nothing in local storage is shared externally.

Your choices

  • You can clear your browser's local storage at any time to wipe the cached session from your device.
  • You can request deletion of your Firestore data or your waitlist email via our contact form with the subject line "delete my data."
  • You can unsubscribe from waitlist emails via the link included in any notification we send.

Data location and retention

Data is stored in Google Cloud's us-central1 region. Session data is retained while the Service is active; waitlist emails are retained until the Service launches and you've been contacted (or you request deletion, whichever is sooner).

Children

Unanswer is not intended for children under 13. Please do not use the Service if you are under that age.

Changes

This policy may be updated from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above. For significant changes we will try to notify waitlist subscribers by email.
